inLast year I was a vendor at the huge burlesque convention in Seattle, BurlyCon. Burlesque ladies know and love their glitter! It was a great time with lots of awesome stuff which included (but was definitely not limited to) flashy costumes, rhinestoned accessories, sparkly makeup, jewellery and shoes.
Gaaaahhhh…..so much for a magpie to love!

More photos from the Vancouver International Burlesque Festival Fundraising event. The festival is fantastic – you should check it out if you are in the city in May of 2014.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by the Lux Mystica table to chat and check out our sparklies!
The photo is a little blurry. It was dark and atmospheric and very burlesque.
I hear there will be more VIBF events coming up and I encourage you to come out and participate!

These are lightweight but sturdy and will last until your burlesque days are long gone.

I’ve been away from the blog for a while. Moving and such. Lots of beads to move.
But I have not been idle all this time!
First up, pasties! The official costume of burlesque!
These are made with two types of sequins: large flat checkered holograms and smaller cupped hologram. The beads are gold silver-lined and the smaller sequins are attached with the beaded arch of the gold beads. This make for a huge sparkle, especially as I made sure the surface was completely encrusted – almost double layered, so there would be no space that wasn’t glittery. The outer rims have a looped edging in beads.
– “Lilac Lust” Pasties with Tassels
The next set of pasties I call “Lilac Lust”. These are also “encrusted” with lots of sequins and some nice fat milky lilac beads for a rich textured look. The detachable tassels on swivel mechanism makes for big twirls!
Next up – “Time Travel” pasties! These were inspired by a theme for our local burlesque show. I wanted them to look a bit like the swirling spiral vortex that was on an old TV show from the 60’s that had something to do with time travel.
I didn’t want black and white, but I needed something so that the spiral would show up – contrast. Blue and white it was. This was fun to do. I have been experimenting with a different kinds of material for the pasties and have found thick interfacing to be really easy to work with. It’s light, flexible but really strong and takes the needle well. Yay!
So that they didn’t get boring, I alternated beads with larger pearls on the “white” arm of the spiral. I like this effect and it helps your eyes go funny, which is the whole point of the theme! I was going to put tassels on these too but I haven’t yet and I’m not sure I will. They look pretty cool as they are.

…with a second set of pasties. These are beaded and jewelled an have crystal/beaded tassels. This was fun and more are coming in the future.
The tassels are mounted on a fishing spinner and twirl fantastically well. A jeweled bead sparkles at the top of the tassel for maximum action. The face of the pasties are encrusted with beads, sequins, crystals and stones. Very posh.
I will get a friend to try them out ASAP to test whether they are too heavy or not, but I think they will be fine, they just need to be attached securely, which all pasties should be, amiright?
19 Sunday Aug 2012
Here’s what I did with a pair of matching “cathedral” circles;
Yes, I turned them into pasties! I have friends who use them in burlesque shows and I thought it would be cool to have: 1) custom made ones and, 2) pasties on a gothic cathedral theme because of it’s utter incongruity.
I like the way they look and they aren’t too heavy. They would be with tassels, so I didn’t add any. The fabric was a good colour but a little too heavy for the project. A light silk would be perfect.
